Like most of Italy, Lucca also has a rich history. Its Renaissance era walls still remain intact after several centuries, unlike in other towns in the surrounding area. Lucca is located in Tuscany, at the base of the Apuan Alps. It's super close to the Tuscan coastline, only half an hour's drive away, so you can enjoy the beach anytime.
If you're interested in Roman antiquities, this is the town to see them. Here you'll find the remains of the ancient Roman amphitheater called Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. You'll be able to discern the shape of what was once the amphitheater. There are also the remains of a church from the 12th century. Saints Giovanni and Reparata cathedral was the first cathedral to be built in Lucca. There are also several towers and villas from the 12th to 16th centuries that remain in the town today.
Modern day attractions in the city include the San Martino Cathedral. The Cathedral contains the sacred relic of Santo di Lucca, or Sacred Countenance. There is also the Church of San Michele in Foro to see, and the Basilica of San Frediano.
One fine aspect of the town is that the city's walls were maintained throughout the centuries, while other towns left theirs to decay and fall apart. Today you can actually walk along Lucca's walls, along a pedestrian promenade. The areas surrounding the walls are well-maintained, with plenty of gardens and greenery to see. If you can see the city from the air, a ring of greenery surrounds it. At one time this area was a gigantic parking lot, which wasn't very attractive. Lucca is one of the most eco-friendly cities of Italy, encouraging people to walk and bike-ride around the town.
If you're renting a car, you'll find Lucca easy to reach. You can also take the train there from Pisa or Florence, making travel simple from other parts of Italy. You'll find the train station right outside its southern walls. The train station is within walking distance of all the sights you'll want to see, including city walls and the cathedral. If you're not too mobile, don't worry, as this town doesn't have the hills and slopes that many other historical cities in Italy do. You won't have to worry about doing any climbing here.
A visit to Lucca in Tuscany will make your trip to Italy complete. While you can see the basic sights on a day trip, there's a lot to see in Lucca, so you'll want to spend an entire week exploring all that the city has to offer. Lucca will provide a peaceful respite away from busy western cities with its greenery amongst the ancient ruins.
